Upper and Lower Melinda

This is a legend out of the Glyndon/Reisterstown area. I am not sure if it is true or not but it sure does sound cool.

From one Site:

Grave site of witch who taunted townspeople in the 1800's. Before she was hanged and cut in two by an angry mob, she put a curse on Reisterstown saying if anybody visited her grave, her two halves would crawl closer to each other until one day, they would become whole. For assurance, the townspeople buried her upper half on one side of Reisterstown in a grave marked UPPER MELINDA. The other grave in unmarked and has not been found till this day.

Another Site:

She was deemed a witch and after she was hanged, she was cut in two. Before she was hanged though she placed a curse on Reisterstown and said that if anyone visted her grave, her two halves would creep closer and closer together until the two parts were finally reunited. She would then rise from the grave and unleash havoc on the town of Reisterstwon as payback for what they did to her.

No one has ever found the grave of Lower Melinda. Upper Melinda is located on unused farmland in Reisterstown.

I never found the grave site to the upper part but I did find this mailbox that had the name on it. I was getting dark when I went and I didnt really want to walk the farm trying to find the grave. It is still a cool legend and story and to see this sign it made it seem real.

  5. Where exactly is the stone located? After taking a left OFF of Worthington, on to Bonita, I proceed down that road until I am forced to take a right. That road continues for a few feet, then curves to the left; where I can divert to the left into the farmhouse, or take a right. EXACTLY where abouts should I stop an look following these directions?

    1. With the route you took, you will make a sharp right over a stone bridge. Then a sharp left. You will come up to, and pass the Old Mushroom farm on the left (long green building). About 500 feet after that, Road will make sharp turn to the left at a narrow little bridge. Once over the bridge, the road will start to incline. Keep looking to the left. You will eventually see a driveway which leads up a hill. At the entrance of the driveway, the lawn is well manicured. You will see a stone with the words "Upper Melinda".

  11. It is located at the beginning of a driveway. I pass it every day. I do have a picture of it if anyone is interested but I do not see an option to add a picture.

  13. If anyone believes this story they are morons. When I was in high school over 25 years ago we use to take kids up there to scare them. Its not a grave, it's simply a stone with the name engraved given to the property. It was very common to name your property years ago. Just like you would name a ranch the Double K Ranch or George Washington's estate was called Mt. Vernon. It was made up, plain and simple...

    1. I don't understand the point you are trying to make. You are saying that because people used to name their property that there is no way they could have had a historical reason for the name? You may be right but you didn't make yourself clear at all. My assumption would be that as often as not, people name a property for a purpose.

  16. Melinda was the name of the old man's wife who used to own it back in the early 1900s. A guy I know did construction for the "new" owners and asked.
